Yongding
The Yongding district a two hour drive to the west of Xiamen is a rural area dominated by rugged terrain and farmland. The Hakka inhabitants, an ethnic minority, built Earthen Castles (Tulou) for their clan homes and they are often found beside the streams flowing from the highlands. The Hong Keng Village area of Yongding has a remarkable collection of these Earthen Castles - circular, square and rectangular. Built over 1500 years ago, they are still inhabited today.
One of the more traditional Hakka style buildings with an impressive 220 rooms dating back to around 1910.
One of the earlier Hakka buildings (1834), Kujiu Lou is in the less common square style as opposed to the traditional round or circular style.
The smallest of the Hakka style buildings with only one level and 16 rooms
One of the most impressive Hakka style sites with over 400 rooms, once home to more than 1000 inhabitants.
