Because the Cantonese have always been geographically isolated from their rulers to the north they have been regarded as independent thinkers with their own approach to living.
They eat different foods, have their own vernacular literature and their own style of Chinese Opera. As well, they speak a Chinese dialect that is completely unintelligible to Chinese speakers from other parts of the People’s Republic.
Guangzhou’s physical and mental distance from central authority has worked in its favour and so has its optimum riverine location.

One result of the long history of interaction between foreign traders on the Pearl River and their Cantonese counterparts has been the latter’s introduction to and easy adaptation of new technology.
Space Age Attractions
While the latest products are still exhibited twice a year at trade fairs, you can gaze over the panorama of tomorrow Chinese-style at the Guangzhou Tianhe Space Park on Daguan Road.
China’s largest theme park dedicated to space science and technology is an informative way to spend a weekend morning or a few hours between business meetings or tee times on the province’s outstanding golf courses.
The 10-odd exhibition halls and activity zones highlight the country’s achievements in space research with items like the famed Long March 3 rocket and an exhibit about China’s first manned space flight.
It’s not far from ‘tomorrow’ to ‘yesterday’ in Guangzhou if your next stop is a historical treasure on Xianggang Hill.
One of China’s best museums has been constructed around the tomb of a ruler of Nan Yue as the kingdom in this part of southern China was called in 210 BC.

Nearly 25 years later and after multilane expressways, a modern subway system and multistorey glass and concrete office blocks have been constructed, the city skyline is still changing.
Take a taxi to Yuexiu Hill for a lookout over the city and a stone tribute to a local legend.
Guangzhou Landmark
At the heart of Yuexiu Park – one of eight major expanses of green in the city centre – is the Five-Ram Statue, the symbol of the blossoming metropolis.
The legend, I learned, relates that five messengers riding on the backs of goats were sent by the gods. Each goat held a sprig of rice in its mouth to denote the region’s eternal prosperity.

The interior of the sprawling compound, a part of the biggest garden restaurant in China, is beautifully landscaped with little gardens, tiny bridges and peaked tile roofs.
It’s best to make a reservation because even though there are places for 1000 hungry patrons, the Panxi is exceptional popular. Perhaps this is because there are 2000 varieties of dim sim on the menu.
